Minimalist, uber-functional, and super fast, it quite possibly is the best photo viewing experience you’ll ever have on your Mac. What’s more, we’ve thrown in some flat out amazing features that will dazzle you and your friends just by interacting with your photos.

If you haven’t seen a demo of <a

The crazy thing is, it’s here now (well, actually very soon), works fantastically, and it’s relatively inexpensive ($69.99). Leap makes a lot of sense for viewing your photos on a big screen or a projector and we’ve made it so that it works seamlessly with Unbound for Mac. Take a look and <a

It’s something that’s in the back of our minds while we’re using software, but it’s not a shiny new feature that sells products. But it’s so important that when software runs slow, it ruins the user experience and people stop using the software.

A good example is iPhoto. I have a modest 12GB in my iPhoto Library on my two year old 15-inch MacBook Pro. It takes 25 seconds to get iPhoto to pop up and another two and a half minutes of staring at the spinning pinwheel of death before any of the photos show up. (That said, subsequent iPhoto launches were much faster on the order of 30 seconds.) When I quit the app, the iPhoto library update took another 40 seconds. Grab a stopwatch and try it out yourself.

Sometimes as developers, all we think about is the next great feature. But why spend time on a great feature if the users dread running the app?

<a

A lot of needed features aren’t there yet and we’re going to fill the gap with Unbound.

Captioning – yes, basic stuff but people who organize photos need this. Captions serve as reminders of the finer details of a photo as well as help others understand the story behind the pixels

Re-ordering – another basic feature but if you’re going to tell a good story, you have to have your pictures in order

Meta-data – sounds technical, but there is important data like when you took the photo buried in the picture file that makes a photo more meaningful

These are just few of the useful features we’re adding to Unbound. Getting your photos organized is getting a lot harder but we think Dropbox combined with Unbound might just relieve some of those headaches.

The post <a

Here’s why.

Although Apple doesn’t make these numbers public, I bet most people search instead of browse through the App Store categories to find the apps they’re looking for. In iOS 5, if you do a search, you’ll see five apps and you can scroll down effortlessly to see the first 25. I timed it – it takes one swipe and less than one second to get all the way down the list. Most importantly, people can see the price, stars, and number of ratings, which in my opinion are key factors for purchasing an app, for a bunch of apps very quickly.

Here’s the new layout for iOS 6.

It shows you one app at a time, in the order that Apple determines. It takes a lot of swipes and over 11 seconds to see the first 25 since the transition animation has to complete before you can swipe again. Now this wouldn’t be such a big deal if the search results are good and the best apps for whatever you’re looking for shows up first… but they don’t. Quite frankly, recently the App Store search results have been horrible. No offense to the makers of “Picasa HD Lite”, which ranks #1 in a search for “picasa,” but Web Albums’ 5-star average from 483 ratings should be ranked higher than a 2.5-star average from 30 ratings. Yet, Web Albums ranks #3 in the search.

Some may argue that the screenshots in the new layout are important for shoppers. But I don’t think one representative screenshot says much about any app, especially utility apps like ours.

With this new layout, people will be less likely to try out apps that aren’t at the top of the results. Some great apps will get buried and people just won’t have the time or the patience to get to them. App users won’t get the best apps and end up with a subpar experience on their Apple devices, while good developers won’t get paid and will stop developing for iOS. Is this what you want, Apple?

(The topic for this post came up while I was talking with Steve Troppoli from East Coast Pixels, the makers of the excellent photo editing app, Pixite Apps.

We released Web Albums HD for Picasa and Google+ version 3.0 yesterday and the reception has been quite positive. As you may know, we added a whole bunch of new features, some features that we have been working on for quite some time. One of the biggest changes is Picasa tags. You can browse and search tags now much like Albums, as well as create, add, and organize them. We tried to accomodate as many workflows as possible. For example, you can create and add tags when uploading new photos, while doing batch organization from the multi-select button, or from individual photos.

Another big change is the advanced slideshow options, which includes new transition animations, captions on the photos, slideshows spanning multiple albums, and music playback. Coupled with AirPlay, we think people will be showing a lot more of their Picasa / Google+ photos on their TV and projectors.

We’ve also finally added three features that might not be apparent but people have been asking for a long time, and they are:

Full-resolution photos

rotating

and reordering photos

I think the implementation for full-resolution photo viewing is pretty slick – all you have to do is pinch in or double tap to zoom into the photo, and if a larger photo exists, the app will download and display it. This is really fantastic on the Retina displays with high-res DSLR photos.

As for rotating photos, we’ve added a button in photo in full screen that rotates the photo 90-degrees clockwise every time you tap on it. Pretty straightforward.

Lastly, reordering photos. This is a bandaid to one of the limitations of Google’s API for Picasa Web Albums, which is apps cannot change the order of photos inside existing albums. To get around this, we now let you change the order of the photos before you upload them to Picasa Web Albums. Hopefully, this will alleviate some headaches.

If you haven’t seen it already, here is the full list of new features:

- Full resolution when you zoom into a photo
- Rotate photo
- Video caching and saving
- Viewing and editing Google+/Picasa tags
- Reordering photos before uploading
- Strip location data before uploading
- Disable caption entry when uploading
- Hide certain albums
- Play slideshow using multiple albums
- Different slideshow transitions
- Slideshow music
- Caption on slideshow
- AirPrint
- Upload full size JPEGs from imported RAW files
- Send to apps like DropBox, Photogene, ArtStudio, GoodReader, and CloudOn

Enjoy! And keep the feedback coming.

The post Pixite Apps.

Over the years, we’ve found that each API has its challenges. One of the biggest challenges working with the Flickr API has been displaying the right photo sizes on different devices. Up until recently, the maximum resolution that Flickr other than the full resolution was 1024 pixels. That’s fine for iPad 1 and 2, but on an iPad 3 with the Retina display, 1024 pixel photos look plain awful with all the pixelation.

A couple months back, Flickr announced a few new sizes on their website – 1600 and 2048 pixels. But those sizes weren’t available in the API and only applied to newer photos, not the ones going years back. Fortunately, we did some digging and found a way to get those sizes from the API, and now we’re are able to display the 2048 pixel images, oh so nicely, on the new iPad.

But what about those older photos that don’t have 2048 pixel images? Loading full size images for all the high resolution photos is a performance nightmare, even if the devices could handle it. So we compromised and gave each high resolution photo a “HD” button that the user can tap to display the photo in full resolution. Better yet, if the user zooms into a photo, she’ll get the full resolution photo, too. To keep performance up, we then resize those full size images to 2048 pixels for normal browsing.

By the way, the full resolution images are only available on Flickr Pro accounts. Free Flickr account users only get maximum 2048 pixel images, not full resolution. A good reason for people to upgrade to a Pro account.

The post <a

The Reading Rainbow theme song plays in my head as he speaks to an auditorium full of developers. He had started with a motivational speech about the future of the interactive medium and finishes with a demo of the upcoming reading rainbow app. I’m at a lunchtime session of WWDC, which I’m attending for the first time. Over the week I’ve spent my days attending sessions about development, listening to lunchtime speakers like Lavar Burton and meeting tons of interesting people.

Like any Apple event, WWDC is all about the lines. It starts with the keynote; if you want to sit in the main room you’ll need to get there at least four hours early. That sets the stage for the rest of the week. It turns into a rhythm of lining up, finding a seat, learning a little something and then lining up again.

Each session is incredibly professional and well rehearsed. The presenters are engineers, but it doesn’t show. The material is presented in a straightforward, easy-to-follow way and the speakers don’t stutter or get lost. Apple and all its employees really take the time to do this well. Each day of the conference is packed with interesting sessions about super nerdy stuff like UIViewControllers and Core Data Concurrency. They go from beginner level to very advanced topics covering both OSX and iOS.

A second side to the conference is the labs. In the labs developers have the chance to sit down one-on-one with apple engineers and really get into the code. This is invaluable. Its one of the few chances to talk directly with the engineers who actually write the code you’re working with. The engineers are friendly, approachable and very smart. Go in with a few questions and you can learn a ton. There are lines for the popular labs but once you get face to face it’s not rushed and you get the time to really talk to the engineers.

The sessions and labs are really worth your time, but what WWDC is really about is fellow developers. Spending a week meeting talented, like-minded people is an inspiring experience. Everyone is friendly, easy to talk to and interested in hearing what you’re working on. It’s great to be reminded that weather you’re a rock-star developer or just starting up, really, we’re all just nerds who love what we do.

We’ll have to see if WWDC will stay the same scale and format with all the demand. In the coming years the conference may change significantly, but I would definitely recommend it if you have the chance to come to San Francisco for a week.

The post <a
